To celebrate Black History Month, visitors to the Texas State Capitol can view Blazing New Trails: Nineteenth Century African American Politicians. This exhibit commemorates the 52 African Americans who served as state legislative members or Constitutional Convention delegates during the final decades of the 19th century. Almost all of these innovators had been born into and lived in slavery. Despite facing many obstacles, these trailblazers authored over 100 bills and resolutions. Their pioneering participation and forward-thinking legislation set important precedents for the state. Their legislative efforts have resonance and relevance to Texas today. Discover the stories and achievements of these first African American statesmen in Texas. Blazing New Trails will be displayed in the Capitol ground floor rotunda. The exhibit opens on Thursday, February 1, 2018, and will remain on display through Wednesday, February 28, 2018.
