Austin Women Shave Heads to Support Cancer Patients
Amy Decosmo and Cassie Helton made the decision this summer to shave their long locks for those currently battling or who have battled cancer. But it didn’t just end there for these two determined women. Amy and Cassie both trained with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training (TNT) program for the Nike Women’s Marathon October 20.
Through TNT, they found that they possessed the ability to do more in the fight against blood cancer. Each woman set a personal fundraising goal and, when reached, vowed to shave their heads – something most women wouldn’t dare to do. Amy and Cassie followed through with the commitment to shaving their heads October 12 at Roaster’s Coffee in Cedar Park.
Cassie came to Team In Training in 2007 and set her goal for this year at $10,000. She has raised more than $42,000 for the LLS since 2007. Amy joined TNT last September and set her personal goal at $100,000 for this season. It is relentless people like Amy and Cassie that make the vision of a day without cancer possible. At its 25th anniversary milestone this year, TNT has trained more than 570,000 people and raised more than $1.32 billion.
