For Younger Readers
A Kitten’s Tale
by Eric Rohmann
As winter approaches, three little kittens fear what will happen; they have heard that snow will cover everything and that it will be cold. But the fourth kitten has a different attitude – he approaches the coming unknown as exciting, not fearsome. He can’t wait! This is a wonderfully simple tale that acknowledges and respects childhood fears of the unknown and teaches the benefits of having a positive outlook. For ages 3 to 6.

Cold Snap
by Eileen Spinelli
A cold snap is announced in the newspaper headlines and the chilly winter in the town of Toby Mills finds the residents feeling cold and hopeless. The days drag on as the icicles on General Toby’s statue grow to the ground. Luckily, the mayor’s wife rallies the community to brainstorm ways to find warmth. Illustrator Marjorie Priceman’s gouache paintings create a cheery, cozy winter wonderland any child would enjoy visiting. For ages 5 to 8.

For Older Readers
Behind the Bookcase
by Mark Steensland
Sarah is spending the summer at her deceased Grandma Winnie’s house as her parents fix it up to sell. She discovers an unfinished letter that alludes to something strange happening behind the bookcase. Reminiscent of “Alice in Wonderland”, Sarah enters the passageway behind the bookcase and discovers the Land of Scotopia. Guided by Balthazat, a talking cat, Sarah overcomes her fears and embarks on an adventure filled with secrets and a thrilling mystery. For ages 9 to 13.

My Name is Mina
by David Almond
Mina, a homeschooled, girl enjoys unlimited time to explore mathematics and myths. She finds everything is possible at night when her imagination takes flight. She begins writing in a journal she keeps on her bedstand and discovers so much about herself and the world around her. Although this is a prequel to “Skellig”, this novel can stand on its own as an engaging read. For ages 10 and up.
