The Austin Area Alliance of Black School Educators named two educators African American Teacher of the Year at its annual scholarship banquet and award ceremony on May 22. In addition, five high school seniors were selected to receive $1,000 scholarship awards each.

 

“The candidates this year are of the highest quality,”said Dr. Mary L. Thomas, event chairperson and master of ceremony. “They are an extraordinary group of young people, not only academically accomplished but also actively involved in their communities. We are confident they will continue to inspire us in college and beyond.”

 

The two teachers honored were Stacey Jackson of Wells Branch Elementary School in Round Rock ISD and Diana Wright Mean of Doss Elementary School in Austin ISD.

 

The students who received scholarships were Aaron Mitchell Cartwright of James Bowie High School in Austin ISD, Kori Michele Cooper of Stony Point High School in Round Rock ISD, Eric Jerome Horton of Del Valle High School in Del Valle ISD, Tony Josh Jones of Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville ISD and Illya Alexi Maxwell of William B. Travis High School in Austin ISD.

 

Austin Area Alliance of Black School Educators is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the educational accomplishments of Austin area children, particularly African-American children.
