AF: How long have you been a writer?
Even though I’ve always loved reading and telling stories, I didn’t seriously start writing children’s books until about 10 years ago. I always thought that writers were born with a “gift” to write, and I didn’t think I had what it takes. It wasn’t until recently that I learned that writing is like anything else. It takes hard work, perseverance and practice.
AF: What inspired you to write this book?
I have always been enchanted by folktales about changelings (fairies who switch places with human children). I wondered, What do the fairies do with the human children they kidnap? And why would a changeling want to come and live in the boring world of humans? A trip to visit my nieces in Ireland gave me the spark to start this story of two sisters who get tangled up in a changeling swap gone wrong.
AF: How long have you lived in Austin?
I’ve been here 15 years. When I first moved to Austin, you could get anywhere in town in 15 minutes. Shows how much things have changed!
AF: Tell us about your family.
My husband and I have two daughters, 7 and 4. They are adventurous little rascals who love exploring the outdoors. We spend a lot of time on greenbelts and swimming in the creeks around town. We have a few favorite swimming holes, but we are all sworn to secrecy as to where they are!
AF: What do you like most about Austin?
I love that even though the city is growing like crazy, you can still find quiet spots to get away from it all.
