If you don’t have health insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid or another source, local officials say HealthCare.gov can help you find and enroll in a plan. Open enrollment for the Affordable Healthcare Act happens once a year, from Nov. 1 through
Jan. 31. For participants who sign up by Dec. 15, coverage starts Jan. 1. Those who wait until Jan. 31 to enroll will receive coverage that begins Mar. 1. If you choose not to buy health insurance this year, you may have to pay a tax penalty of $695 or more.
Trained professionals at the local Enrollment Assistance Center can answer your questions for free. Call 512-534-0802 or visit the office at 2030 E. Oltorf St. Hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours on Tuesdays until 8 pm.
