With the help of their families and the community, Berkman Elementary students raised $1,556 for the Central Texas chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Berkman counselor Lesa Gonzalez said supporting the nonprofit was a high priority for the school this year after a second grade student was diagnosed with leukemia in September.
During the three-week campaign, students took home a coin box and collected money from friends and family to benefit the society. They also raised funds through fun and creative ways, like paying $1 on Fridays to eat lunch on the school’s stage with Principal Lisa Roberts and Gonzalez. Dianna Montes’ kindergarten class collected the most money, $262. For their efforts, the class won a lunch donated by the Olive Garden. Gonzalez says they plan to continue their fundraising campaign for the non-profit in the 2014-2015 school year.
