On April 28, the Colorado River Alliance and Austin Water unveiled the Texas Colorado River Rolling Exhibit (Mobile River) at Dobie Middle School. The Mobile River is a traveling, interactive science learning center featuring collaborative exhibits and hands-on activities housed inside a 42-foot trailer.

It will serve as a field trip experience for more than 5,000 seventh-grade AISD students beginning this May. In addition, an expected 3,000 to 5,000 sixth-through-eighth grade students and their families will enjoy the Mobile River through community events and partnerships with area schools and throughout the Colorado River basin.

“We hope this opportunity will get students excited about the river we all depend on, ensuring that tomorrow’s leaders understand the environmental and economic importance of water conservation,” Sarah Richards, Colorado River Alliance executive director, said. “Our goals are to develop a workforce of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals with a high knowledge base of water quality and quantity needs for a sustainable water supply, while at the same time reduce water use and increase knowledge of the Colorado River.”

The Mobile River is made possible by presenting sponsor Samsung Austin Semiconductor, which donated close to $200,000, as well as additional funders, including Impact Austin, Texas Pioneer Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, 3M and the Lower Colorado River Authority.

“We are excited about the Texas Colorado River Rolling Exhibit because it aligns well with Austin ISD’s science, technology, engineering and math initiatives,” Dr. Paul Cruz, superintendent, Austin Independent School District, said. “This partnership allows middle school students to go beyond the classroom walls to experience and learn about real-life environmental issues involving the protection and conservation of our water resources.”

The Mobile River is also available for presentation at community events. If you are interested in booking the Mobile River, contact geoff@coloradoriver.org.
